Old
cell phones can be turned into cash
to help victims of Hurricane Charley
Cellforcash.com
and Choice Cellular join forces to
turn old cell phones into dollars
that will benefit Florida 's hurricane
relief efforts
OCALA
AND OLDSMAR, Fla. (Aug 31, 2004) -
Two Florida companies, Choice Cellular
of Tampa Bay and CellForCash.com of
Ocala, announced today they have joined
forces to turn old cell phones into
cash that will be used to benefit
the victims of Hurricane Charley.
People
may donate their old, unused cell
phones at any one of Choice Cellular's
locations (or at its affiliate Advanced
Wireless stores) in Tampa Bay , Clearwater
, Orlando , Pasco County and elsewhere.
CellForCash.com has agreed to purchase
any and all of the phones that are
collected. Then, Choice Cellular will
donate 100 percent of the proceeds
to Volunteer Florida's Hurricane Charley
Relief Fund.
This
fund will be used for needs unmet
by other disaster relief organizations
also working to help rebuild lives
and communities in the wake of Hurricane
Charley, which swept across 25 Florida
counties on Aug. 13, killing 27 people
and causing billions of dollars in
damage.
"We
were very fortunate, we could have
been in the same position as many
of our neighbors," said Garrett Bell,
district manager of Choice Cellular,
which is headquartered in Oldsmar.
"We are only doing what our neighbors
would do for us."
"As
the storm approached we thought we
were going to get hit hard," said
James Mosieur, CellForCash.com's chief
executive officer. "When it suddenly
changed direction, we were relieved
but we still feared for our friends
and neighbors that were caught in
the path."
Bell
and Mosieur said they both realized
their cell phone-related companies
were in a unique position to raise
dollars for the hurricane relief effort.
Choice Cellular sells new cell phones;
CellForCash.com buys old, unused cell
phones for cash, refurbishes them,
and then re-sells them, often in foreign
markets.
Because
of advances in technology, consumers
and businesses retire more than 5
million cell phones every month, Bell
and Mosieur said. Although many of
them have value and could be sold,
the phones often end up in desk drawers
or in landfills.
